Paul spends much of his time in his apartment, wearing a floral housecoat and a smattering of eyeshadow, waltzing sensually around the room with his inanimate partner as he immerses himself in memories. Eventually, his strange behavior compels him to seek professional help, and he begins seeing a psychiatrist named Dr. Tracey (Reggi Defoe). At the psychiatrist's office, Paul catches the eye of Julie (Leah Marlon, in her sole film appearance), a perky and beautiful secretary who takes more than a professional interest in him. She desperately wants him to ask her out on a date.

It was into this cauldron that director (a pseudonym, perhaps for a then-mainstream director who wished to remain anonymous) stepped. According to production notes from the time, Virgin and the Lover was initially conceived as a straightforward period piece set in 18th-century France. However, as the script evolved, it became a fever dream of shifting identities, sexual awakening, and betrayal.
Like many European co-productions of the era, Virgin and the Lover was shot without live sound. Actors spoke their native languages (French, Italian, and English) on set, then post-dubbed. The English dub, in particular, is famously stilted, adding an unintentional surrealist quality. Virgin and the Lover -1973- Classic- Feature- D...
