They'd met three years before the apocalypse, in a coffee shop that was now a crater. Back then, love was infinite bandwidth—texts all day, dates planned weeks in advance, fights about nothing. Now, love was a finite resource, measured in calories, clean water, and the number of shells left in Kael's shotgun.

The first rule is harsh. Unlike traditional romance where partners promise to rescue each other from dragons or debt, the Code states that you cannot be the hero . In an apocalypse, heroism gets you killed. You must love your partner enough to let them be competent themselves. You share resources, but you do not sacrifice your oxygen tank for theirs unless you have a pre-agreed death pact.

The characters meet under terrible circumstances. They may dislike or distrust each other, but cooperation is mandatory for survival.
