In 2002, PADS Software Inc. was acquired by , a much larger EDA giant. This acquisition would permanently change the product's trajectory. Although Mentor Graphics acquired the company in 2002, the first fruits of this merger were seen in 2003. Mentor Graphics revived the "PADS" name, which it had inherited through its acquisition of Innoveda (a firm that had previously consolidated PADS and ViewLogic). To differentiate it from its high-end Expedition tools, Mentor positioned this revamped PADS suite for the low- to mid-range PCB layout market.
