Directed by Josée Dayan, this 2002 version stars the charismatic Gérard Depardieu as the aging, wiser Edmond Dantès. Unlike the 2002 American film (which drastically compressed the timeline and invented a love triangle), the Italian miniseries sticks closer to Dumas’ sprawling narrative.

The film follows (Jim Caviezel), a young sailor whose life is destroyed when his best friend, Fernand Mondego (Guy Pearce), betrays him to steal his fiancée. Framed for treason, Dantès is imprisoned in the island fortress of Château d'If . After 13 years, he escapes with the help of a fellow prisoner and, using a hidden treasure, transforms himself into the wealthy and mysterious Count of Monte Cristo to systematically dismantle the lives of those who wronged him.
